2 SCHOOL HISTORY
TINGTIBI LOWER SECONDARY SCHOOL SEEMINGLY SILENT YET DYNAMIC WITHIN! |
According
to one of the oldest man from the area, the name ‘Tingtibi’ originated from the
Khengkha words “Ting” meaning deep
down the valley and ‘bi’ meaning plain. Therefore, Tingtibi is a place
on a small plain deep down the valley surrounded by mountains on all its sides.
This needy institution was established in the early part of 1991 as a community
school funded by SCF (Save the Children Fund) to meet the education requirement
of the children, firstly for those parents who were not able to send their
children to other schools, secondly due to the increasing population within and
outside the Tingtibi town. Tingtibi was famous for its timber/logging business
and people from different walks of life had gathered here for their earning.
Infrastructure was based on temporary sheds in the initial stage but the
momentum for adequate infrastructure gained in the following years. It was a
WFP fed day school from the very beginning to enhance and support poor
community. At the same to realize the schooling for children is affordable. In
the same year, school functioned under the headship of Mr. Kelzang Tenzin along
with two teachers, with about sixty boys and girls in pre-primary level in two
classrooms. In 1992 Mr. Tharpa Rinchen took over the charges from former head
teacher as a next head teacher. In view of the increasing enrolment more
additional infrastructures were made available and the school was consequently
upgraded till grade V. After successful completion of grade V, students were
placed to present Yebilaptsa Middle Secondary School that was then a Lower
Secondary level. In 2002, when Mr.Sonam Tobgay took over as the next head of
the school, there were eight teachers, comprising of four female and four male.
Students’ population was overwhelming with 320 boys and 180 girls against 9
teaching members including the school head. There were 11 sections. Shortage of
teachers was managed either through temporary teachers or shift system thereby
causing a down fall on the delivery of lesson. With the constant increase in
admission due to tend in the process of urbanization, the school was further
upgraded to Lower Secondary School in the year 2002. Mr. Sonam Tobgay took over
as the new head from Mr. Tharpa Rinchen in the same year. With the up gradation
of the school, the school was shifted to the new site. Twelve new teachers were
transferred to this school totaling the number of teachers to 26 with other 6
support staff against 760 boys and girls. The first batch of class eight
students passed out in the year 2003 and were placed at Yebilaptsa Middle
Secondary School. Mr. Karma K took over as the fourth head teacher of the
school from Mr. Sonam Tobgay in Feb, 2006. Since Tingtibi fell under the food
secure area, WFP facility was lifted up from the school up this year. Now the
school is pure day school. It has 14 sections with 500 students and 18
teachers. The school has a well-equipped laboratory and library. We get
continuous support from the SCF in terms of funding for various activities and
supply of library books.
